dee ray

As a special treat to all you beer aficionados, we have an indepth interview with dee ray for you.  (special thanks to Teen Beat)

Q: Ok first of all what's with the name dee ray?
Dee: Well it's the name of my band and also my name, but since it's not capitalized, I'm thinking it's mostly the name of the Band that I'm in.  Does that make sense?

Q: Kinda, I guess, Moving on, what style of music does dee ray, the band play?
Dee: (smiles) Well, it's  been described as Psychedelic Hillbilly Rock meets 80's new wave.  Now that  we are a three piece without synth/keyboard, we are leaning  more to the Psychedelic Hillbilly Rock meets LA Punk with a hint of mint.

Q: Hmm tasty, who do people say you sound like.
Dee: (laughs) that's always a fun question, the Pretenders, Velvet Underground, X, the Experience, Double Trouble, the Osmond's.

Q (shocked) The Osmond's?
Dee: Just kidding.

Q: You said you are now a three piece, explain?
Dee: For the last Seven years and through 2 recording projects (CD's available at deeray.com),  we had Sue del Guidace on Keys, she's awesome!  This year after much soul searching, I decided to take the band in a different direction and get back to the roots of our music, which is the Power Trio, that's how Johnny, Al and I started out, way too many years ago.  We had a major shake up, Al moved to North Carolina and I decided that I didn't want keys in the mix.

Q: That must've been tough.
Dee: Very, we love Sue,  there was nothing personal about it, I just wanted a different sound and vibe.  Al leaving was like loosing an arm, but change happens.

Q: So who's your drummer now?
Dee: (big smile) Jim Ayala, you've seen and heard him in the Ghost Town Deputies, he also played with the Attacks on their last CD....he is amazing.

Q: The Ghost Town Deputies...isn't Johnny, your guitar player in that band, too?
Dee: Yep he's their Lap Steel, sometimes guitar player. What a coincidence, eh?

Q: So what's next for dee ray and Dee Ray?
Dee: (laughs) Well, we are getting ready to play the band out, then it's into the studio to start CD #3.

Q: Where can people see dee ray play?
Dee: Stay tuned. Our first gig with the new lineup is at an undisclosed location for the very mysterious Van Nuys Nano Brewing Company in October. We think it's in Van Nuys somewhere. They said they would kill us if we said more than that.  Then a show at The House of the Future in San Diego, in November.  Check our myspace page, for more details.

Trash Es Basura

In the middle of what could have been a successful reunion tour of garden center parking lots, and taxidermy shop opening galas, the several members of the late seventies-to early hair gel eighties super-group TRASH ES BASURA found themselves fixing a flat they encountered along a long stretch of the 405 freeway. The flat, as it turns out, was the deflated flat-top hair style then currently being worn by the sarrusophone section of the band. Naturally, this prompted the creation of yet another mythical tale associated with the group, as they had no tour van at the time they were on the freeway. And yet, as legend has it, they immediately caught a whiff of a pleasant aroma not normally associated with head and shoulder work. It seemed to emanate from somewhere in the neighborhood, and has been described by the band as smelling "warm." The previously non-existent tire was fixed, and the three surviving members of the band drove immediately to what they believed to be the source of the redolence, VNTBC headquarters. "Where's the Grudlann Room" they asked, but got no response seeing as no one else was present. "Well, mates," they seemed to say, "let's set up and start playing." And so a major chapter in a minor work of musical knowledge was writ, and writ large. To this day, those few present at the inception, and there were terribly few, nay none that can be recalled, were certainly surprised to find themselves enjoying the live music. To this day, TRASH ES BASURA remains our house band, despite numerous fumigations and repeated requests from carping carpoolers. The band can be heard nightly, except when they have the night off, which is currently most weeknights and also Saturday and Sunday nights. So come, enjoy the Grudlann, savor a pint of your favorite VNTBC ale, and dance the night away to TRASH ES BASURA.
